What To Look For When Choosing A Childcare Centre
Is the school or center licensed? Being licensed means that teachers' credentials, children's medical records, fire precautions, the building's condition, and the ratio of adults to children are double-checked. For example, in New York City there must be at least two teachers if there are more than ten three-year-olds in a group.
How large is the room? Do the room and toys look cared for, clean, and well organized?
Is there a safe outdoor environment? How often do the children go outdoors? They should have some large motor activity at least once a day.
Does the class have a refrigerator for snacks? Is water available to drink during the day along with juice at snack time? Does the school or center have a dress code? Rough-and-tumble clothes allow a child to move freely and not worry about getting dirty.
Does the school or center require a complete change of clothes to make your child feel comfortable if she soils what she has on?
What is the policy on accidents? Are you called immediately, whether you are at home or work?
Does the school or center require you to phone if your child isn't coming to school?
Does the school or center require written permission from the parents if a child is being picked up by someone who doesn't usually come for him?
Are there enough developmentally appropriate activities for your child within the room? Is there a dress-up corner for fantasy, a play kitchen, blocks, a book corner, and toys that emphasize fine motor skills, such as puzzles? Does each class offer a variety of arts and crafts experiences, such as creating collages and finger painting?
Is the room a happy chaos? Do all children seem generally busy and relaxed? Is there a well-organized but natural rhythm to the day - a busy, somewhat noisy atmosphere during free play and then calm time for snack and stories?
Does the school or
have a policy on how to discipline a child? (I believe that discipline should he used as a teaching experience. A time-out accompanied by an explanation is reasonable, whereas humiliating a child by screaming at her is not.)

Is every child greeted by name and made to feel comfortable in the classroom?
Does the school or center have a special time for music and dance? Are there guinea pigs or snails to teach understanding of the mysteries of the animal world?
