Is the school or center licensed? Being licensed means that teachers' credentials, children's medical records, fire precautions, the building's condition, and the ratio of adults to children are double-checked. For example, in New York City there must be at least two teachers if there are more than ten three-year-olds in a group. How large is the room? Do the room and toys look cared for, clean, and well organized? Is there a safe outdoor environment? How often do the children go outdoors? They should have some large motor activity at least once a day. Does the class have a refrigerator for snacks? Is water available to drink during the day along with juice at snack time? Does the school or center have a dress code? Rough-and-tumble clothes allow a child to move freely and not worry about getting dirty.
